Commissions

The organizations and ministries at Assumption are organized into one of eight commissions.  The commissions are directed to different areas of community life or education.

Athletic Commission

 Community Life Commission

 Christian Formation Commission

 Finance and Administration

 Christian Service Commission

 Social Commission

 Prayer and Worship Commission

 Youth Commission

Each commission has a number of committees within that commission.  The following is a list of each commission and its associated committees.   Following the committee’s name is the survey code used to represent that committee.  You can match the committees and codes with those on your Time and Talent survey form to be returned to the parish.

Athletic Commission

 Athletic Association (AC)

The Assumption Athletic Association encompasses the Greek ideal of a “healthy mind in a healthy body” and takes it one step further, to incorporate the spiritual as well.  The Catholic ideals of teamwork, community pride, and a Christian attitude toward competition are all part of the goals of the Athletic Association.  The Assumption Athletic Association provides the children of the parish the opportunity to participate in soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and track without any outside funding from the parish.

The Assumption Athletic Association meets the third Wednesday of the month from September through June at 7:30pm in the Rectory basement.  There are no meetings in July & August.

If you child plays sports for Assumption you are a member of the association.  Those adults who do not have children in the program can belong for a nominal annual fee.

Members of this organization are responsible for coaching sports, teaching good sportsmanship, and are positive role models for the children to show them how athletics can build character while being part of the team.  Those parents who do not wish to coach are also needed to help with the annual fund raising projects that provide the capital that pays for the programs we sponsor.  The skills needed most are the same traits that are needed to be a good parent/teacher/mentor.  A love for athletics is a plus but is not a prerequisite since there are many non-sports related activities that are needed for the success of the organization.

The Athletic Association has six members annually elected to leadership positions and 20 to 40 active participants.  The Association serves over 600 children annually in their programs.

Extra Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharistic (W06)

An Extra Ordinary Minister of the Eucharist (Eucharist Minister) is a lay person who assists the priest(s) in offering Communion to our Catholic community at masses approximately once every 4-5 weeks and to the sick and homebound if you chose to volunteer.  You must be a practicing Catholic registered in the parish and 18 years of age.  Special training is required.  There is about an hour of explanation and demonstration.

Ushers/Greeters (W08)

The ushers/greeters act as the official hosts in the house of God.  It is their desire to make your stay as warm as friendly as possible.  If you are in need of assistance during our Eucharistic celebrations, do not hesitate to contact an user/greeter who is available to assist you in any way possible  New members of the ministry are needed to fill open positions at most of the masses.

Liturgy of the Word for Children (W10)

Children in grades kindergarten through 4th are welcome to come downstairs each week for the Liturgy of the Word during the 9:00am or 10:30am mass.  The Gospel is read and discussed on the children’s level.  Our goal is to make God's word more understandable to the younger members of our parish on a regular basis.  We measure success by the continued attendance of children at each Sunday Mass as well as the feedback we receive from the children during our presentation. Our biggest challenge is making sure we always have enough teachers.  A more minor challenge is having supplies available on a regular basis in the two rooms of the church basement.

The committee consists of two leaders, 25 to 30 adults and 10 to 15 youth helpers.  We have between 60 and 100 children at the weekend programs.

Volunteers for this special ministry are needed, no prior experience is necessary.

Perpetual Adoration (W11)

Jesus calls us to spend one hour a week with Him in the Adoration Chapel.  Pray the Rosary, read the scriptures, meditate, or just sit there and tell Him about what is going on in your life.  Jesus will not be outdone in generosity.  You will leave far richer in peace, joy and love than when you arrived.  Invest in this “hour of power” with our Eucharistic Lord and Savior.

Sacristans (W12)

Care and cleaning of Sanctuary and 2 Sacristies.  Men and women who volunteer for the care and cleaning of the sanctuary and two sacristies (dust, vacuum, change candles, etc) throughout the year, and another group who volunteer to launder altar cloths, albs, corporals, purificators, etc. throughout the year.   Volunteers from the community of Assumption do a thorough cleaning of the church each spring.  Both groups could use extra help.

White House Jesuit Retreat (W13)

Since 1922 White House Retreat has offered comfort to retreatants making a 3 day silent journey with the Lord – Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola – and accepting the Lord’s invitation – “Come aside and rest a while.” (Mark 6:30).  On your journey you listen to instructive, informal talks by the Jesuit retreat director; you have the opportunity for private conferences, daily mass, sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  Your private room and tasty, family style meals, shared in silence, enhance your experience.  Optional fellowship in the evening offers you the opportunity to share your thoughts, renew old friendships and make new friends in faith.  The White House Retreat is located south of St. Louis on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River on 75 beautiful acres.
